Analyzing Spark Plugs
This was a piston (on the left). This 1996 225 Evenrude needed a complete remanufactured powerhead installed at a cost of $5210.00 which incurred a full month of the boating season lost. The customer, stated "the outboard was making a horrible noise but I was 10 miles out and had to get back so I decided to leave it running and come in". On the right is what the piston is supposed to look like.
After carefully examining all the components of the outboard, we found a defective carburetor. This defective carburetor caused a lean condition on that specific cylinder thus damaging the piston.
- PROBLEM: Piston Detonation due to defective carburetor.
- CAUSE: Defective carburetor
- PREVENTION: A constant lean condition is always detectable by examining the spark plugs. If the customer had been using our program we would have detected that there was a lean condition on cylinder # 5. The cost to repair at that point would have been $450. That would include the replacement of that carburetor and labor.
